The biggest reason why furnaces overheat is poor airflow. Dirty filters are the most common culprits of this problem, but poorly installed ductwork is another one. So are blocked air returns, closed vents, or dirty furnaces. You might also have an evaporator coil with a layer of lint covering it.

Sometimes, after you start the thermostat, your furnace might blow hot air for a few minutes. Then it might start blowing cold air before the home gets up to the temperature you want. That’s a symptom that your furnace is overheating. We go over more symptoms in the video.
There are several things you can do if your furnace is overheating. It’s a good idea to start by checking your air filter. Then you can check your vents and make sure you aren’t blocking a return with a piece of furniture. Finally, you can have the manufacturer-recommended annual maintenance done.
