How often have you ever called a tech about your AC freezing over? Do you know why it froze over in the first place? In this episode, we’ll explain what happens when your air conditioner freezes over, why it does, and what to do about it. We also go over why it’s such a common problem.
One of the biggest causes an air conditioner to ice over is a lack of airflow. A dirty filter or several closed vents can make it so not enough air gets cooled. That means the condensation in your system gets cooled instead, and that’s where you get the layers of ice.
If your air conditioner does ice over, the first thing you want to do is let it thaw. Turn the AC and thermostat off, then let it sit and warm up for about half a day. After that, you’ll want to call a technician to come out and diagnose the problem. The AC needs to thaw all the way before they can check it.
