How much do you know about your garbage disposal? In this video, we talk about how they work, when to replace them, and some troubleshooting. We also go over why some are more expensive than others and what you should and shouldn't put down them.
Unlike what a lot of people think, garbage disposals don’t have blades to cut up food waste. They use something called an impeller to throw it against the walls of the disposal where it’s ground up. The walls are like cheese graters, shredding the waste into the small pieces that go down the drain.
Because everything gets thrown at those walls, they can get built up with food. That build-up can start to smell after enough time. To clean it out, you can fill the sink with water and mix a quarter cup of baking soda in. Then pull the plug and start the disposal to flush it out.
As long as your plumbing can handle one, a garbage disposal is great at getting food waste away from your home. That means fewer flies hovering around your trash cans and fewer smells to deal with. Some of the higher-end ones can grind the food down to a fine paste with almost no noise.
