Do You Know Why Your Water Heater Doesn’t Explode?

A water heater tank holds a lot of hot water under pressure. Do you know what keeps it from failing? In this episode, we talk about one of the components to keep that from happening. We also talk about different ways you can figure out other issues you might be experiencing.
An expansion tank is something that’s on a water heater system that protects it from excess pressure. When water heats up and cools down, it expands and contracts. That expansion increases the pressure in your system. If the pressure increases too much, it could cause the tank to rupture.
Your expansion tank is there to stop that from happening. It’s a smaller tank that usually sits above your water heater, attached to the cold water side. Inside the tank is a rubber barrier that stretches to let excess water in, relieving the pressure. Then it relaxes when the pressure lowers.
We go over more ways your expansion tank protects your home in the video. If your water heater doesn’t have an expansion tank, it’s important to have one installed. Expansion tanks can help prevent dangerous ruptures in your water heater. Besides possible water damage, a ruptured water heater can send pieces flying across a room to stick into walls, appliances, or worse. But an expansion tank works hard to prevent that.
