Spring Cleaning Your Utah Furnace: Some Tips

It’s hard to believe, but summer really is just around the corner! In a few short months, we’ll be complaining about how hot it is and thinking that those cold days of winter weren’t so bad after all. Well, maybe not. At any rate, just as sure as warm weather is on the way, you can be sure that winter will return too: putting your Utah furnace “to bed” properly in preparation for the summer months will help ensure that it will be ready again when the time comes. Here are some tips for spring cleaning your furnace.

  1. The first thing to do is to change that air filter! You can be sure that it is full of grime and dirt and no longer suitable for use. If you use a washable filter, gently clean it up using mild detergent and water; if you use a disposable filter, just pop out the old and pop in the new.
  2. Carefully dust around coils, tubing, vents, and so forth: make sure not to bend any parts! The most efficient method is to use a rag dampened with plain water; this should easily take care of any unwanted dust, dirt, and debris that may have accumulated on your unit during the peak of its use.
  3. Switch the furnace off and take a little time to clean the fan as well. As you can imagine, it’s been working hard all winter and has been gathering its own dust bunnies.
  4. Turn off the pilot light once you are sure you will not be using the furnace again. There really is no need to keep burning gas when it is not being used, and if you are skittish about handling a pilot light, the gas company can come out and do it for you.
  5. Vacuum and wipe down all air return vents as well as registers to allow your air conditioning system to work properly.
