The first things to check after an earthquake are your furnace and water heater. Water and gas lines lead into them, and older homes often use solid pipes instead of flexible lines. Those solid lines can shift and separate when your home shakes, leaking water or gas into your home.
Your first step should be to check the area to see if something looks out of place. If there is a leak of some kind, you might see water seeping through a crack or smell gas in the air. Most modern water heaters have earthquake straps, but if yours doesn’t, it could have tipped over.
If you know where your shutoff valves are, you can turn off a leaking system to prevent further damage. And if you smell gas, it might be a good idea to leave the home until the gas company can make sure it’s safe.
