Fire Safety for Your Home

If a fire broke out in your home, how fast do you think it would take to get out? Research from the National Fire Protection Agency says people only have about 2 minutes after a fire alarm goes off to get out of their homes safely. That’s hardly any time.

Why do fires spread more rapidly now? This is due to a variety of reasons, but mostly it comes down to the materials used to build homes as well as home furnishings are more flammable than they were before. Engineered lumber burns faster than hardwood, as do synthetic materials used in furniture and bedding. Also, the way homes are designed with open floor plans, higher ceilings, and fewer doors encourage fire spread.

In this article, we’ll go over fire safety tips so you and your family are prepared for a fire situation.

1. Have A Fire Escape Plan

Plan at least two ways to escape each room in your house, as well as have a specific meeting place outside your home. Then, go over it with everyone in your family.

2. Install Smoke Detectors

Installing smoke detectors and regularly testing them can help warn you of a fire in your home. Manufacturers recommend that they should be replaced every 10 years because the sensors inside become unreliable after that time.

The National Fire Protection Agency says, “For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by a qualified electrician so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates.”

3. Close Doors As You Escape

Doors are excellent fire blockers. A closed door can compartmentalize the fire and significantly reduce how quickly it can spread.

4. Practice your plan

Practice your Fire Escape Plan so it’s second nature for everyone in your home. Make sure they all know the designated meeting spot to go to in case of a fire in your home. Fire Prevention Week happens every year in early October in honor of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. So if you’re planning a time to practice annually, October is a great time to revisit fire safety.

5. Bonus Maintenance

When was the last time you checked your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors? If you can’t remember, it might be time to grab a ladder and test the ones in your home. Take a few minutes to check the manufacturing date on the back of your detectors as well. If they’re 10 years or older, manufacturers recommend replacing them because the sensors are unreliable after that. Dust build-up can limit a smoke and carbon monoxide detector's ability to operate correctly, so take your vacuum up the ladder with you to clean off your detectors.

If you’re having issues with your smoke detectors or you’re uncomfortable testing or replacing them, it’s a good idea to call an electrician.
